SITE SETTING OUT
Function
This is the act of transferring the building setting from the drawing to the ground.
Having broadly located positions of the stores, access roads, hoarding etc., the actual position of the building is then physically mapped on the ground.
Setting out is an important part of planning as it will determine that the building fits on the plot and relates properly to plot boundary, access road, services such as sewers, electrical lines, municipal roads etc.
Potential problems
Cases have happened especially on greenfield sites where a building is positioned outside plot boundaries.
Or the building placed too close to fences, boundary walls or above sewers.
Also, cases have been witnessed where the actual dimensions of the building are wrong resulting in a bigger or smaller building in comparison to the one planned
Materials, plant, labour requirements
Dumpy levels, timber boards, lines, water lines, tape measures
A skilled surveyor is required to transfer the building from the drawing/floorplan to the ground
Procedure for site setting out
- Study and internalize the drawings
- Physically measure out the plot
- Using boards, mark out position of the external walls
- Do the same for internal walls
- Mark positions of foundations
- All above should be shown on the ground using lime
